The Old Fashioned is about a simple as a drink you can get beyond just drinking liquor straight. It’s just Whisky and a sugar cube (or simple syrup, or really anything sweet), bitters are often added, but even without it’s a nice drink. If all you have is whisky, you can add some sugar, a few drops of water, stir it ( The classic preparation has you coat a sugar cube in bitters and muddle it all together, but it just needs to get mixed ), and you’ve got a decent drink on your hand.
To really take it to the next level, if you have an orange or lemon on hand, cut a little bit of the peel off with a paring knife (or vegetable peeler if you have it), you want to go just into the surface and get a nice long strip. If you get too much pith (the white stuff that is the next layer down below the peel) try to shave it off with your knife. Turn it outside down and twist it to express some oils on to the drink. Then take the inside and rub it around on the inside of the rim. At this point there is all number of fancy things you could do with the peel to cut it into fun shapes or twist it into a spiral, but I usually just give it a slight twist and drop it in.
An Old Fashioned can work with any Whiskey (or any liquor for that matter), however I typically go for Bourbon, but Rye is also another good choice
